Beat Up Bill

A severely beaten bill languishes on the steps of the capitol.
One Badly Beaten Bill, way up on Capitol Hill.

Meanwhile way up on Capitol Hill...

It's been a hot minute since Schoolhouse Rock, and a long while since we've checked in with the Bill way up on Capitol Hill, and News Flash, it's all gone to shit. From the lobbyists, to partisan shenanigans and hot air, to the shit-stained steps of the capitol, this bill has been through the wringer. It's not like we didn't see this coming, with the gridlock and the games, but in this enshittified, late stage capitalistic hellscape, the only game in town is to game the game.

Sadly the Schoolhouse Rock version of this has not aged well, and it speaks to a time that seems quaint now by comparison (See the video below if you want to watch it).

My version of the Bill was drawn in Clip Studio Paint with digital red and blue pencils, then inked, and finally finished with Photoshop. One of the things about the sketch, is that my original version had Bill holding the cigarette differently, but it didn't feel as natural as I wanted, so I redrew it to the version shown here.

Schoolhouse Rock - I'm Just a Bill

The 1976 Episode shown above... was truly a gentler, simpler time in American politics and schooling. Most of what was covered in my AP Government class in high school is absolutely anachronistic by today's standards with government grinding to a halt amidst partisan greed, corruption, and ineptitude, not to mention gutting of important programs like the CDC, ACA, Medicare, and USAID. The kid in the cartoon would shit himself to see the kind of shoot-yourself-in-the-foot knee jerk decision making our Congresscritters have been making (or not). Sigh.
